What is Azure Virtual Desktop?

Azure Virtual Desktop, or AVD, is Microsoft's cloud based virtual desktop service. It runs a full Windows desktop and your business apps on Azure, then streams that experience securely to any device, without the data ever leaving Azure.

How is Azure Virtual Desktop different from Citrix or VMware Horizon?

AVD is native to Azure, so it plugs directly into Microsoft 365, Entra ID, and Intune without extra licensing or infrastructure on top. Citrix and VMware Horizon can run on Azure too, but they add their own infrastructure and licensing layer. Most clients moving off them do it to cut that extra layer, not because the old platform stopped working.

Is Azure Virtual Desktop secure?

Yes, when it's configured correctly. Data stays in Azure and never lands on the local device, and AVD supports Conditional Access, multifactor authentication, and Microsoft's broader security stack. The configuration is where most of the actual risk lives, which is why we build security in from the design phase instead of bolting it on after.

How much does Azure Virtual Desktop cost?
